About

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is widening State Road (S.R.) 50 from two to four lanes between Hernando/Sumter County Line to east of County Road (C.R.) 478A. Work will consist of building 12-foot-wide travel lanes with 5-foot-wide paved shoulders in each direction and a two lane bridge adjacent to the existing bridge over the Little Withlacoochee River.

Additionally, a 12-foot-wide shared use path with a 30-foot grassed median will be built on the south side of the roadway. Other improvements include road resurfacing and drainage improvements. The purpose of this project is to accommodate the increased traffic demand and to improve safety along the corridor.

WHAT TO EXPECT: During construction, motorists should expect lane closures and detours on weekdays and weekends. Electronic message boards and other signage will be used to direct traffic through the work zone. Uneven pavement is a common, condition with projects that require temporary asphalt pavement or resurfacing, as the contractor must put down different layers of asphalt during various phases of construction. Motorists are asked to exercise caution and reduce their speed while driving through the work zone. The construction schedule may change due to weather or other unexpected conditions.
