ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Motorists are advised that the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will implement a series of overnight closures along Interstate 4 (I-4) between the Kirkman Road (State Road (S.R.) 435) and S.R. 528 (Beachline Expressway) interchanges beginning Sunday night, April 27, through the morning of Friday, May 2. Each night, the closures will begin as early as 10 p.m. and are expected to reopen by 6 a.m. the following morning.

These closures are necessary to prepare for a traffic shift onto the new ramp lane and to perform overhead sign maintenance.

Here is a schedule of the planned closures:

Sunday night, April 27

  • Westbound I-4 exit ramp to eastbound S.R. 528
  • Westbound I-4 exit ramp to Sand Lake Road (S.R. 482)

Monday night, April 28, and Tuesday night, April 29

  • All lanes of westbound I-4 from Kirkman Road (S.R. 435) to east of S.R. 528
  • Westbound I-4 entrance ramp from Kirkman Road
  • Westbound I-4 entrance and exit ramps for Adventure Way
  • Westbound I-4 entrance and exit ramps for Sand Lake Road
  • Westbound I-4 exit ramp to S.R. 528.
  • Eastbound I-4 exit ramp to Sand Lake Road (only April 29)

Wednesday night, April 30, and Thursday night, May 1

  • All lanes of eastbound I-4 under the westbound I-4 exit ramp to eastbound S.R. 528
  • Westbound I-4 exit ramp to eastbound S.R. 528
  • Westbound I-4 exit ramp to Sand Lake Road
  • Eastbound I-4 exit ramp to Sand Lake Road

Detour Information

  • During the April 27 overnight closures, motorists traveling west on I-4 who wish to access S.R. 528 (Exit 72) will exit early, at Exit 75B, to southbound Kirkman Road and proceed to the Sand Lake Road ramp, staying in the left lane and turning left at the traffic signal. From eastbound Sand Lake Road, motorists will turn right onto southbound John Young Parkway (S.R. 423), proceeding to S.R. 528. Motorists traveling west on I-4 who wish to access Sand Lake Road (Exit 74A) should take Exit 74B onto Adventure Way. From there, motorists will turn left onto westbound Hollywood Way, then turn left again onto southbound Turkey Lake Road and proceed to Sand Lake Road.   • During the April 28 and 29 overnight closures, motorists traveling west on I-4 will exit early, at Exit 75B, to southbound Kirkman Road and proceed to the Sand Lake Road (S.R. 482) ramp, staying in the left lane and turning left at the traffic signal onto eastbound Sand Lake Road. Motorists will turn right onto southbound John Young Parkway (S.R. 423) and proceed to S.R. 528. Drivers who wish to return to westbound I-4 can continue west on S.R. 528 to access the entrance ramp to I-4. Motorists traveling east on Sand Lake Road who wish to access westbound I-4 will turn right onto southbound Turkey Lake Road and proceed until they reach Central Florida Parkway. From there, motorists will turn left onto Central Florida Parkway and take the westbound I-4 entrance ramp on the right. On April 29, the eastbound I-4 exit ramp to Sand Lake Road will also be closed. Motorists traveling on eastbound I-4 who wish to access Sand Lake Road (Exit 74A) will continue east and take Exit 75A at Universal Boulevard. Drivers will then turn right onto southbound Universal Boulevard and proceed to Sand Lake Road. See attached detour map for detailed detour information.
  • During the April 30 through May 1 overnight closures, motorists traveling east on I-4 will be directed to take Exit 72 to eastbound S.R. 528, then use Exit 1 to access northbound International Drive before taking an immediate right turn onto the loop ramp to westbound S.R. 528. From westbound S.R. 528, motorists can proceed to eastbound I-4. The ramp from westbound I-4 to S.R. 528 will also be closed, requiring motorists traveling west on I-4 who wish to access S.R. 528 to exit early, at Exit 75B, onto southbound Kirkman Road and proceed to the Sand Lake Road ramp, staying in the left lane and turning left onto eastbound Sand Lake Road at the traffic signal. From there, motorists will turn right onto southbound John Young Parkway and proceed to S.R. 528. Motorists traveling on westbound I-4 who wish to access Sand Lake Road (Exit 74A) should take Exit 74B onto Adventure Way. From there, motorists will turn left onto westbound Hollywood Way, then turn left again onto southbound Turkey Lake Road and proceed to Sand Lake Road. The eastbound I-4 exit ramp to Sand Lake Road will also be closed. Motorists traveling on eastbound I-4 who wish to access Sand Lake Road (Exit 74A) will continue east and take Exit 75A at Universal Boulevard. Drivers will then turn right onto southbound Universal Boulevard and proceed to Sand Lake Road. See attached detour map for detailed detour information.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) advises motorists to follow all posted detour signs. Construction schedules are subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

This work is part of two larger improvement projects at the S.R. 528 and Sand Lake Road interchanges. This operation is a critical step in both projects toward improving capacity and traffic flow at these busy interchanges.
