ORLANDO, Fla. — July Fourth is the start to a four-day weekend for many. With a record number of Central Floridians expected to hit the roads, safe driving habits are crucial.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) urge drivers to make sure their vehicle is ready for summer travel; and remind drivers to buckle up, look twice for pedestrians, and never drive distracted or impaired — including not driving while drowsy.

Travelers can check roadway conditions and view live streaming traffic cameras on FL511.com, home of FDOT’s Florida 511 traveler information system.

FDOT provides roadside assistance to stranded motorists through its fleet of Road Rangers. This safety and service patrol provides free, limited roadside assistance, including changing a tire or assisting with minor mechanical repairs. Road Rangers also protect motorists and crash scenes by alerting oncoming drivers of the incident. Motorists on Interstate 4 (I-4), I-75, I-95, and Central Florida’s toll roads can request a Road Ranger’s assistance by dialing *FHP (*347). Road Rangers are available year-round, including busy-traffic holidays such as July Fourth.

“As we celebrate the holiday, let’s remember that safety on the road is everyone’s responsibility,” FDOT District Five Secretary John E. Tyler, P.E., said. “Drive safely and responsibly as if your loved ones are right there with you. Every trip should be a reminder that safe driving protects not only your family, but everyone on the road.”

Lieutenant Tara Crescenzi of FHP urges Florida’s motorists to exercise caution on the roads and to make a plan when attending social gatherings.

“We urge all motorists to prioritize safety on the roads,” she said. “This is a time of celebration, but it’s also a time when traffic crashes increase. Please remember to buckle up, avoid distractions, and never drive under the influence. If you’re attending gatherings, designate a sober driver in advance. Let’s work together to make this a safe and enjoyable celebration for everyone.”
